IUD and Implant Birth Control
IUDs and implants are low-maintenance, highly effective birth control. West Front Primary Care in Traverse City provides these services, even if you’re not a patient with us.
IUD stands for Intrauterine Device (basically: a device inside your uterus). It’s a small piece of T-shaped flexible plastic that is inserted by a medical professional. It’s long-term and reversible birth control, and one of the most effective methods available.
The birth control Implant (AKA Nexplanon) is a tiny, narrow rod about the size of a matchstick. This implant releases hormones into your body that prevent you from getting pregnant. A medical professional inserts the implant into your upper arm and you’re protected from pregnancy for up to 4 years. Read on to see if either of these options might be a good fit for you.
IUD Birth Control Device
An IUD (Intrauterine Device) is a reversible method of female birth control that is inserted through the cervix into the uterus. An IUD can contain hormones (examples: Mirena, Skyla, Kyleena) or not contain hormones (Paragard). Both work in different ways to prevent pregnancy and both are extremely effective (greater than 99%). An IUD can be used for 3-10 years, depending on the type of IUD inserted. Ask your provider about the advantages and disadvantages of an IUD and which one might be the appropriate choice for you.
IUD Procedure Overview
An IUD insertion is an in-office procedure that takes less than 15 minutes to perform. It can be immediately effective for pregnancy prevention, depending on the time of your menstrual cycle at which it is inserted.
Nexplanon Birth Control Implant
Nexplanon is a small, thin, flexible arm implant that provides up to 3 years of continuous birth control through secretion of the hormone etonogestrel. Nexplanon is reversible and can be removed by your provider at any time during the 3 year period. It is very effective (greater than 99%) at preventing pregnancy. There are advantages and disadvantages of Nexplanon, which should be discussed with your provider.
